Braemar Waxed Field Jacket

In the Scottish Highlands, the waxed field jacket was made for one job: to stand up to drizzle, wind and brush without asking permission. The Braemar Waxed Field Jacket carries that code: a corduroy collar, tartan lining, a brass zip with ring pull under a snap-button storm placket, and four pockets (two on the chest, two bellows pockets below).

You choose the finish: waxed (a wax treatment that repels water and picks up wear marks over time – the charm of the piece) or unwaxed – the same cut and lining in clean cotton, lighter and maintenance-free.

Five unwaxed colours: Khaki, Army Green, Brown, Dark Green and Navy. And three waxed: Dark Green, Coffee and Navy.

On the body

A hip-covering length and a cut with room for layers underneath: a flannel shirt, sweatshirt or knit.

Tartan lining

Opening the jacket is half the pleasure: the tartan check lining covers the whole body and sleeves, and a military-style inner label finishes the piece.

Corduroy collar

The corduroy collar is the signature of the British field jacket: soft against the neck, with ribs that contrast with the smooth finish of the body.

Brass zip

A YKK brass zip with a ring pull (easy to open even with gloves on), protected by the snap-button placket.

Ribbed inner cuff

Inside the cuff sits a ribbed storm cuff that keeps the wind out and holds the sleeve in place – the detail that separates a real field jacket from a fashion jacket.

Size chart

Choose by your chest measurement. "Fits chest" is your body measurement; "Garment chest" is the jacket laid flat, armpit to armpit, doubled (tolerance 2–3 cm). Sleeve is measured from the centre back to the cuff. As this jacket is made to be worn over layers, go for the larger size if you are between two.

Care

Waxed version:

• Do not machine wash or tumble dry – the wax will come off
• Clean with a cloth and cold water, no soap
• Re-wax from time to time with a wax made for waxed cotton

Unwaxed version:

• Hand wash or delicate cycle, cold water
• Dry in the shade

Both: do not bleach, and store on a hanger in a well-ventilated place. Marks and uneven sheen on the waxed version are characteristics of the finish, not defects.
